The 1998 Reunion was planned to coincide with 1 Field Hospital’s 30th Anniversary and it was the perfect opportunity for a joint celebration by the members of the Association and the current Unit.

The enormous amount of time and energy, expended over the previous two years, to ensure the success of the reunion resulted in an unforgettable time for those who attended. The sequence of events for the weekend was splendidly arranged, and the immense amount of preplanning, and attention to detail, guaranteed the smooth running of the entire three days.

Of the forty-three nursing sisters, of the RAANC, who served at 1AFH between May ’67 and November ’71, fourteen attended the reunion, and for each one of us it was a privilege and an honour to be there.Pervading the whole weekend was a sense of love, caring and support for one another, and each person by his presence contributed to the weekend’s success.

The reunion left us with a particulary poignant reminder of how, in Vietnam, the medics were the back-bone of the hospital. With the doctors, staff specialists and nurses comprising so very few of the staff numbers it was the medics, in the wards and all the ancillary services, who played such an enormous role in providing the standard of care which is still the envy of hospitals today. We nurses will always hold in high regard the opportunity we had of working with such boys – boys who devoted their time, energy and expertise in such an unselfish and caring manner.

Now these same boys, with whom we were once associated with professionally, were able to gather us together for a reunion. It is through the enthusiasm, drive and consistent hard work of these former medics that 1st (Aust) Field Hospital Association is now so viable. Since Vietnam we have been a fragmented, dissipated group and now, once again, we are a supportive cohesive one. Our sincere thanks, appreciation and gratitude go to Bob, his Committee and to his group of active supporters for a memorable weekend.
