Memories of the "Return of the Vampire" Reunion 1998, Sydney One line in the ode says “Age will not weary them” and after the great time that was had, by all in Sydney, that is certainly true. Thirty years seems a long time ago, but it is marvellous how the brain cells start to rejuvenate themselves and the memories start flowing. On ANZAC Day, the South Australian contingent compared photos and stories of the good times had in Sydney. The praise heaped on the organizers was enormous and I will keep my thanks short because I know that the number of letters in commendation would be the size of the Sydney telephone directory. One little story, that must not be missed, is the half dozen or so members who missed the returning buses after the cruise. The advertised departure time was 1630 hours and to their amazement and surprise at 1632 hours the buses had already left (good Military timing). So after a few more beers, taxis were organized for the rather long trip back to Liverpool in peak hour traffic. Everyone has heard of people leaving things in taxis and the great pride the drivers have in returning said goods, unfortunately when one of the ‘crow-eaters’ left his lunch and a few beers in the cab the taxi driver was less than happy. Robin used all his management skills and managed to appease the irate driver. Brian blamed it on weaving in and out of the traffic. Ed: The story, not mentioned here, is the fact that those who missed the bus had ducked into a bar for a ‘roadie’. I have heard many versions of this story, and I believe this tale will now take on a life of its own and achieve growth by exaggeration. Others, over the years, will try to compete; but this legend will become a part of the 1st (Aust) Field Hospital Association history and the “missing” will always hold the dubious honour of being the first ever “Lost at the Reunion” members. And, Brian, we all know that it was really delayed sea sickness! |
